Infancy is when the larynx sits highest in the neck. This elevated position lets the infant breathe and swallow more easily during feeding, and it coincides with a relatively short vocal tract that contributes to the higher-pitched voice typical of early life. As children grow, the larynx gradually descends toward the lower, adult position. So the larynx is at its highest during infancy.
